The Block 2024 episode 36 recap: 'This season's most uncomfortable room' — Judges get brutal – realestate.com.au
The weak have finally found their niche.
Ricky and Haydn shared their first win with sisters Maddy and Charlotte, both teams wowing the judges with their creative and potentially game-changing spots.
While the boys' playroom won the hearts of judges Marty Fox, Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer, the girls' guest room (complete with a separate entrance) was hailed as a “massive selling point”.
Ricky and Haydn received a perfect score from Shaynna and Charlotte and Maddie received a 10 from Marty for their efforts.
Marty also gave 10s to Kylie and Brad. But not the winning kind.
“It's 10 out of 10 for the most uncomfortable room we've seen this season,” he said.

Darren was equally unimpressed, describing the upstairs as “metres of worthless s**t”.
The trio were stunned the moment they entered Kylie and Brad's mezzanine.
Why am I sitting 30 cm from the glass balustrade looking into the living area, he thought, and threw himself onto a brown leather sofa inexplicably placed like a seat in a royal box of a theater.
When Shaynna declares the room a “peep show.”
While Kylie admitted earlier this week that she didn't know what to do with her gaps and was just “throwing stuff in there” and hoping for the best, she was irked by the harsh reviews for their efforts.
He also thought Block nemesis Charlotte and Maddie's plans for a separate entrance were confirmed so late in the game.
It wasn't just Kylie and Brad who failed to impress this week. Courtney and Grant's work has been likened to a therapist's office, which they feel is more like a dentist's waiting room than a room that serves the pool area.
“Didn't we see two leaders fall apart today and two challengers come out on top,” Shaynna said.
The judges loved the “relaxed style” of Maddy and Charlotte's mezzanine office/living space.
Darren noted that the planned guest retreat means the girls are now selling a “dual income property” that can be used as a separate rental or as a grandparent, guest or nanny.
“It's so multi-generational, multi-faceted, multi-revenue that they've opened up a lot of opportunities by turning that window into a door. It's genius,” he said.
Meanwhile, the boys' playroom was a big hit with closet players Darren and Marty.
Marty noted that Ricky and Haydn's place had become a “fun house” that kids would beg their parents to buy or rent.
“That's very clever. That's what you call a league of your own,” Marty said as Darren sighed, “They kept me in Streetfighter.”
“I never thought this would be a house I'd buy, but it tugs at my heartstrings,” Marty said before inviting Darren to a Streetfighter game.
The judges weren't too impressed with Courtney and Grant's chic office, with Marty joking that the plan made him feel like he was in a therapy session.
“You can't deny the colors, the performance, but I just don't feel good here,” Shaynna shrugged.
He said that an office on the mezzanine (where it was provided in the plans given to the contestants) did not give the user any privacy to make and receive calls. And when Darren noticed that their rumpus room “had the style of an angel,” all three felt it would be better as a second bedroom for this controversially large living room.
Of Christian and Mimi's finished room, Darren said, “I've never seen a room where so many things I liked individually looked so boring together. “It's so windy!”
Shaynna agreed, adding that the decor was impractical for a room designed as a pool entrance.
“If you want to change the floor plan to your advantage, you have to fly us,” he said. “It has zero to do with the lifestyle abroad.”
The negative feedback from the judges was a fitting end to a difficult week for the couple, who wasted a lot of time arguing about how best to use their time.
While Christian wanted to focus on finishing the rumpus room and cleaning up for the week ahead, Mimi was busy sanding and painting the unfinished hallway.
He argued that starting to paint the hallway and stairwell was a better use of time and would reduce his workload in the coming week.
“I'm just trying to take things easy,” he said.
Continuing their argument, Christian then remarked, “If you really wanted to finish the hallway, maybe you wouldn't have slept for 24 hours yesterday.”
The exchange left Christian so frustrated that he pulled a Russell Crowe and threw his cell phone down in anger.
“I'm done with this show,” she said when Grant stepped in to comfort her.
With Christian in tears, master Dan (a former contestant who understands the pressure of construction) urges him to “keep his chin up.” You're almost there,” he said, noting that both Danny Wallis and Adrian Portelli have shown interest in the property.
Meanwhile, Mimi decided to stage a protest and sit in her car, delaying (once again) helping the room.
When the second wind finally hit, Mimi said, “We still have a house to finish. I don't want the house to finish me. “I think that's what finished Christian.”
Judges' final scores
Maddy & Charlotte: 28
Ricky and Haydn: 28
Courtney & Grumpy: 23.5
Kylie & Brad: 16
Christian and Mimi: 12.5
